How the world capitals quiz works
Pick a continent, a difficulty and a direction, then press Start quiz. In Country → Capital mode you see a flag and a country name and choose its capital from four cities. In Capital → Country mode it is reversed. The wrong options come from the same continent, so you have to really know the answer. Play 10 or 20 questions, or Endless mode with three lives.
Capitals people often get wrong
Some capitals are not the biggest or best-known city in the country. Australia's capital is Canberra, not Sydney; Canada's is Ottawa, not Toronto; Turkey's is Ankara, not Istanbul; Brazil's is Brasília, not Rio de Janeiro; Nigeria's is Abuja, not Lagos; Pakistan's is Islamabad, not Karachi; Switzerland's federal city is Bern, not Zurich; and Tanzania's official capital is Dodoma, not Dar es Salaam. Expect these in Hard mode.
Recent capital changes
Capitals do change. Kazakhstan's capital is Astana (it was called Nur-Sultan from 2019 to 2022). Burundi moved its political capital from Bujumbura to Gitega. Myanmar's capital has been Naypyidaw since 2005-2006. Indonesia has passed a law to move its capital to Nusantara, but as of 2026 Jakarta is still treated as the capital in this quiz because the move is not complete.
Study tips
- Practise one continent until you reach 10/10, then move on.
- Use both directions: recalling a capital and recognising it are different skills.
- Group by region, for example the Baltic trio Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, or the Central Asian "stans".
- Review the mistake list shown after every round; it is your personal revision sheet.
Frequently asked questions
Which capitals are included?
Every UN member state whose capital is a single, clearly defined city. Countries with split or disputed capital arrangements (for example Bolivia, South Africa, the Netherlands, Sri Lanka, Côte d'Ivoire, Benin, Eswatini, Israel and Nauru) are left out so no answer is debatable.
Can I practise the other way round?
Yes. Choose 'Capital → Country' to be shown the city and pick the country instead.
Are the capitals up to date?
Yes, as of 2026, including recent changes such as Astana (Kazakhstan), Gitega (Burundi), Kyiv (Ukraine) spelling and Naypyidaw (Myanmar).
Does it work without internet?
Yes. After the first load the page is stored on your device and works offline.
